Project Overview

CyberWatch is a cybersecurity monitoring system designed to detect and monitor malicious activity in real time while providing security analytics and automated threat mitigation.

The application monitors different attack patterns, classifies their severity, records security events, and can automatically block suspicious IP addresses. A live dashboard provides security metrics, attack trends, recent alerts, and other monitoring information through a web-based interface.

The system also supports separate testing and production modes, allowing attack detection and security workflows to be tested without enabling real IP blocking during development.

Technical Challenges

One of the main challenges was designing a backend that could continuously detect and process different types of security threats while keeping monitoring data available to the dashboard in real time.

CyberWatch uses Spring Boot as the backend framework, with Spring Security for authentication and authorization, Spring Data JPA and Hibernate for persistence, and WebSocket support using STOMP for real-time communication.

The application detects multiple attack categories, including SQL injection, command injection, XXE, XSS, brute force, CSRF, directory traversal, and DDoS-related activity. Each detected event is assigned a severity level that can influence the automated IP-blocking workflow.

Another challenge was building a security response mechanism that could operate at different levels. CyberWatch supports configurable blocking durations, manual IP management, expiration tracking, and different security modes for testing, production, and selective blocking.

Key Highlights

CyberWatch combines application security, real-time monitoring, and backend engineering concepts:

  • Real-time detection of 10+ attack categories
  • Automatic IP blocking based on attack severity and frequency
  • Configurable detection thresholds and security rules
  • JWT-based security and Spring Security integration
  • WebSocket-powered real-time dashboard updates
  • STOMP messaging for live communication
  • MySQL persistence with Hibernate and Spring Data JPA
  • Security analytics with attack trends and severity distribution
  • Source IP tracking and geographic attack analysis
  • Attack log export and system backup capabilities
  • Testing, production, and hybrid security modes
  • API endpoints for security metrics, alerts, and blocked IP management

A real-time cybersecurity monitoring system focused on threat detection, security analytics, and automated IP-based threat mitigation.

CyberWatch

The monitoring dashboard provides live security metrics, attack feeds, interactive charts, severity analysis, and historical trends. WebSockets are used to push updates to the interface without requiring a page refresh.

CyberWatch also includes dedicated test endpoints for simulating attack traffic, making it possible to validate detection and blocking behavior without relying on real-world attacks.
