Project Overview

NextExt is a modern, feature-rich desktop text editor built with Electron and styled with Tailwind CSS. The application was designed as an enhanced alternative to a basic notepad, focusing on a clean user interface and practical file editing features.

It provides multi-tab editing, an integrated file explorer, automatic saving, keyboard shortcuts, and a GitHub-inspired dark mode interface. The application can also be packaged and distributed as a desktop application for Windows and other supported platforms.

Technical Challenges

One of the main challenges was building a desktop application that could provide a smooth editing experience while managing local files through Electron’s main and renderer processes.

The project separates the Electron main process, preload layer, and renderer application to handle desktop functionality while keeping the editing interface responsive. The file explorer and tab system were designed to allow users to work with multiple files without leaving the application.

Another focus was creating a consistent and intuitive interface. Tailwind CSS was used to build the GitHub-inspired dark theme, custom scrollbars, animations, and other interface elements while keeping the application lightweight and easy to use.
